On March 3, 2020, Grade 12 DP students celebrated completing one of the core components of the IBDP program, the Extended Essay.
The EE, as it is known, is a 4,000-word piece of independent academic research conducted under the supervision of a teacher.
Having chosen a subject and topic based on a particular area of interest, and often also based on their career aspirations, the students undertake research and analysis using a variety of methods such as data collection, surveys, experiments and literature reviews. All good practice for university!
They started the process in March 2019 while in Grade 11, and the final essays were handed in in December. Topics among the 50 Extended Essays submitted this year included:
- “The impact of celebrity endorsements on consumer purchasing behavior” (Business)
- “The effect of pectinase concentration on fruit juice production” (Biology)
- “Defining rotations as 2×2 special unitary complex matrices” (Maths)
At the EE Celebration, Grade 12 had the opportunity to tell the current Grade 11 students, who are about to embark on the same journey, all about their experiences of writing the EE.
