Update from the Eco-School Committee

Since our last update, the Eco-School Committee continued to work in sub-groups on different topics, such as:

  • Energy saving
  • Incentivizing transportation alternatives
  • Reducing meat consumption
  • Carbon footprint awareness
  • Waste separation
  • Reduce and Reuse

For the last nine weeks we have taken daily meter readings of electricity, water, heating (Fernwärme) and electricity produced via Solar Panels. We now have a lot of daily data to monitor and measure the effects of any actions that we take. This week, a high-level audit of the building management system took place and some quick wins were identified. We will publish the results soon. We plan to carry out another audit in September and share the results with students in September.

There is some data collected to evaluate the need for more bike racks for the main building.

Some interested staff cyclers took part in the bike competition “City Cycling” in a trial format for this year. We are planning to expand the participation to students and parents next year.

As part of the next year’s After School Activity program during the winter months, we will offer a course: “Learn How to Fix Your Bike”.

A parent survey will be prepared to be sent out at the beginning of the next school year to collect more data on environmental topics.

There is much to be accomplished and we hope to take action that really moves the needle. If you are passionate about the environment and about driving sustainability efforts at the FIS, get involved. All parents, students, and staff are welcome to join the Eco-Committee.
