Grade 5 Inquiry into Climate Change

Primary

In Grade 5, our new IPC unit of Inquiry is called “Climate Control – Global Warming and Sustainability”.

During this unit, we will be inquiring into climate change and the role that we play in protecting and preserving our environment.

Have you ever wondered:

  • How are environments on earth different?
  • How do humans affect these environments?
  • How might these environments look in the future?

We started our inquiry by finding out about the differences between weather and climate, as well as the difference between global warming and climate change. We are now finding out more about the different habitats, about the plant and animal life that live in each, and about the threats they are facing every day. As we move on through the unit, we will also be asking ourselves what we could do to protect and preserve these environments for future generations. Should we even care? Why?

Our IPC unit also links to what we are learning in English Language Arts. In Writing, for example, we are learning to write non-chronological reports about different endangered animals around the world. In Reading, we have been learning about Sir David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg. Who are these two people? How do they connect so strongly to our IPC unit?

In the words of Sir David Attenborough:

“Our planet is one in a billion, a world teeming with life. But now a new dominant force is changing the face of the Earth: humans.”

ONE Planet. ONE Chance. ONE Future.
