On Thursday, June 15, the FIS Track & Field Athletes Alva, Matilda, Natalie (all G5); Regina (G6); Emilia (G7); Ana (G8); Finn, Hjalte, Teni, Ceres, Midas (G9); Olivier and Tobi (G12) traveled to Berlin to begin competing over the next two days against the other GISST athletes. Our travels ended with a team dinner that left spirits high and ready for the big day of competition.
The event kicked off Friday morning, with the 100m preliminary heats – our Varsity Boys team made a stunning show competing against some runners from BIS, who also train with the German national team – it was already looking to be an exciting competition. Among our competitors at the event, we had some of the youngest participants on our U14 Girls squad, and they performed admirably in their events on Friday. We successfully secured early team points for the Boys’ Varsity squad on the same day, culminating in an impressive U14 Girls and Boys Varsity 4×100 relay to conclude the day.
Saturday kicked off with the 3000m finals, where Natalie, Matilda, and Alva (all G5!), as well as Varsity Boys runners Olivier and Hjalte, competed. The 4x400m relay turned into a bit more drama than we anticipated, as lightning delayed the final races for over an hour, but later, all the events finished, and the sunshine graced us for the awards ceremony.
Olivier, appearing in his final GISST tournament, took it upon himself to help his team bring home the runner-up trophy while personally raking in several medals. The 100m finals were a real treat, as Teni (G9) got a stunning start and managed to give BIS a run for their money – Teni also won a number of individual medals at the tournament.
It was a delight to witness our student-athletes engaging in competition and socializing with students from other schools. The weekend in Berlin was truly memorable!
