This year, we celebrate a decade of providing Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ) opportunities within the international community of the FIS. Over the past 10 years, young individuals have come through our doors, eager to contribute, learn, and discover their paths in life. The FSJ at our school offers more than just a year of volunteering – it’s a transformative experience that combines personal growth, professional exploration, and cultural exchange.
For Klara, this year is an opportunity to pause and reflect on what she truly wants to do. “I have a general idea, but I’m not sure exactly what I want yet. Here at FIS, I get to work a lot with languages, which gives me time to gather experience.” Klara works closely with students in the Primary School, supporting them in learning to read and even participating in outdoor education sessions. “It’s amazing to experience different subjects and help in a variety of ways.”
Kayla, who also joined our FSJ program, was inspired by her cousin’s positive experience the previous year. “I wanted to take a break after my Abitur before jumping into university, and working made sense.” She particularly enjoys outdoor learning and working with younger children in EY. Though Kayla has plans to study IT in the future, she cherishes this opportunity to explore working with kids – knowing it’s an experience that will stay with her, even if it’s not her lifelong career.
For Yannick, the international aspect of the program was a key motivator. “I found out about FSJ through my parents, and what drew me in was the international atmosphere.” One of the highlights of his experience was the school trip with Grade 8, an opportunity to connect with students and staff outside the classroom. Yannik has future aspirations to work at the German Foreign Office and plans to pursue training in public service, where this year of volunteering will serve as a valuable stepping stone.
Behind the scenes, Verena Büttner has been instrumental in the success of our FSJ program. Reflecting on how it all started, she recalls: “Ten years ago, our Head of Business Administration, Thomas Heinrich, approached me about setting up the program. We quickly discovered that we needed a partner organization, and soon after, the Red Cross of Bavaria stepped in.” Since then, Verena Büttner has supported FSJ participants as their mentor, watching them grow and thrive in their roles. “What I love about our school is the freedom it offers. FSJers can bring their interests to life, whether it’s through sports, music, or education.”
Over the past decade, the FSJ program has evolved and now provides a welcoming space in our community where young people can explore their passions and build lasting connections. Each participant brings something unique, and in return, they leave with new skills, perspectives, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. As we look to the future, we remain committed to fostering this spirit of curiosity, collaboration, and cultural understanding for the next generation.
