Our Grade 3 Market was an opportunity for the students to showcase their learning in this unit of inquiry through their informational displays on fast fashion, Global Goal 12, and the design cycle, as well as provide an opportunity for the ‘FIStastic Upcyclers’ company to sell the products they had made by upcycling used clothing.
The Central Idea for the unit was “Sustainable economic choices can benefit humans and the environment.” Students researched fast fashion and learned about its impact on humans and the environment, and then each class was responsible for a project that would allow them to make something new using the material from donated clothing.
With a startup loan of 50 euros from the FIS Business Manager, the three classes made bookmarks, drawstring bags, and wreaths. The students used the design cycle to do market research and improve their designs, and worked in different teams so advertise, produce, and manage the company’s finances.
After the market, the students will look at different options for helping others locally and globally and then they will decide on how the money from the product sales will be used to help others.
