This week marks an exciting milestone for our Grade 12 students as they dive into their Science Internal Assessment (IA) lab days. With 55 students conducting 55 unique experiments over two intensive days, the atmosphere in the science labs is one of curiosity and discovery.
The Science IA is a key part of the IB Diploma Programme, allowing students to independently design and carry out their Biology, Chemistry, or Physics experiments. These lab days are crucial for collecting data and refining methodologies, giving students hands-on experience with real-world scientific inquiry.
This year’s projects are as varied as they are fascinating. Students are investigating everything from the effectiveness of natural versus artificial caffeine on attention, to how different concentrations of salty solutions affect the photosynthesis of aquatic plants. Other experiments include the impact of fertilizers on plant growth, the amount of carotene extracted at varying water temperatures, oscillation periods of a suspended stick and velocity of spheres before and after colliding.
Each experiment tests their scientific knowledge and is also an exercise in creativity and problem-solving. With two days to collect critical data, students will later analyze their findings and produce a 3,000-word report. These IA lab days are a pivotal moment in their IB journey, allowing them to develop essential skills in research, critical thinking, and scientific communication.
