End of Year Message from the Interim Head of School

Dear Parents, Colleagues and Friends of the FIS,

As we approach the end of this calendar year, I want to take a moment to reflect on both the challenges we have faced and the progress we have made as a learning community. In the past weeks and months, we have navigated difficult circumstances – whether they emerged from the ever-changing world around us or from within our own school environment. Yet, precisely these moments have reminded us of our shared purpose and the strength we find in each other.

Our school is a microcosm of broader society. All the tensions, conversions, and hopes that shape our world are reflected, on a smaller scale, within our corridors and classrooms. This connection is not just metaphorical – by understanding and improving how we interact here, we can model what we hope to see beyond the school’s walls. We are continuing to shape our school culture with an increased focus on restorative practices – approaches that are grounded in empathy, sensitivity, and many open dialogues. This ongoing transformation is not a simple endeavor, but it is vital, and it starts with each and every one of us.

As we look around, we have so much to celebrate. From successful class projects and individual student achievements to the collective energy at our events, the first quarter has revealed the strength of our community. Our Primary section hosted Collaborative Learning Walks with parents, we created a PYP action wall and worked diligently towards PYP authorization. The BookBridge team, together with our community, raised over 5,000 Euro through the Auction of Promises. We brought Primary and Secondary students together for a collaborative and fun scarecrow project that also sparked positive interest and appreciation from our neighbors. In our Winter Music Concerts, learners from Primary and Secondary sections filled the stage with everything from classical melodies and energetic pop hits to cherished children’s songs and festive tunes from around the world, setting the perfect tone for the holiday season. Our Volleyball Girls’ Team claimed the GISST championship title for the sixth time – just one highlight amongst numerous GISST victories. I could list many more examples, each illustrating our shared spirit and the impact of working together.

To all members of our community, I make an earnest appeal to continue supporting one another. In our increasingly complex world, surrounded by news of conflicts, confronted with the pressures of rapid digitalization, and challenged by environmental concerns, the FIS core values of caring, respect, integrity, creativity and belonging grow ever more important. Let us carry into the new year the resilience we have built, the strength that arises from our collaboration and individual successes, and the readiness to learn from the difficulties we have and will overcome. Looking ahead, we will continue moving toward PYP authorization while further advancing our MYP and DP programmes. At the same time, we will refine our practices to meet our students evolving needs. We are prepared to embrace new ideas, strengthen our sense of community, and ensure that every individual feels valued and included.

As we move into the next year, I want to express my gratitude for your trust and support. Your openness and commitment continue to shape a school environment that encourages genuine dialogue and celebrates diversity. Together, we will approach the future with confidence, compassion, and determination.

With all my heart, I wish everyone wonderful and relaxing holidays together with your loved ones and a healthy and happy 2025.

Warm regards,

Petra Niemczyk
