Head of Learning Support

Starting: August 1, 2022
Employment Type: Full-time
Contract Type: 2 years
  • 2-year appointment. The position comes with a teaching component.
  • 15 release lessons bi-weekly, 5.000 € annual stipend


  • Responsible for leading FIS learning support, ensuring services, program and provision are aligned with FIS guiding statements and policies
  • Responsibilities according to Head of Learning Support Job Description

Learning Support Services: 

  • Oversee the development of Learning Support
  • Audit the school’s learning support services and propose improvements where appropriate
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures in collaboration with the Head of Academic Affairs
  • Ensure that students are receiving appropriate services based on their identified learning exceptionalities and planned provision
  • Ensure that all student records, case management allocations and learning support assignments are recorded accurately and transparently
  • Ensure programs and services fulfil FIS and legal requirements through the use of an IIEP process, documentation processes & evidence collation
  • Facilitate training and collaboration in the context of professional learning and collaborative planning

Communication and collaboration:

  • Collaborate with Counselors, EAL, External Liaison, external support service providers , Head(s) of Section, Assistant Head(s) of Section and teachers as appropriate and outlined in the Job Description
  • Work with admissions in advising on appropriate acceptance of students with identified learning exceptionalities and ensure transparent and regular communication with all stakeholders throughout the process
  • Plan, arrange and hold regular learning support team meetings, and provide a record of those meetings for relevant staff, stored electronically on the school network
  • Enhance the sharing of ideas by initiating and maintaining contacts with support services in other international schools and local schools
  • Communicate effectively to the school community, using the appropriate channels

Staffing and budgeting:

  • Review and communicate staffing needs for support service allocations to SLT 
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff
  • Ensure the provision of appropriate materials and specialized equipment to support the learning of students with identified learning exceptionalities by following the FIS purchasing procedures

The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Relevant university degree 
  • Experience leading a whole school SEN department an advantage
  • Excellent understanding of SEN practices and implementation
  • Proven ability to lead a team, as well as ability to lead and train for collaboration models with subject teachers
  • Ability to sustain high quality teaching and learning
  • Ability to work proactively and supportively with parents and carers
  • Passionate about developing resilient, confident learners
  • Shows strategic thinking and creative problem solving
  • Passionate, creative, inspirational and highly emotionally literate
  • Excellent communication skills
  • International school experience ideally in an IB World school
