Music Visions

The FIS Primary Music Curriculum provides all students with an outstanding music education that emphasizes music literacy, music making, and world music appreciation. Additionally, the afterschool club entitled “Music Visions” serves as a music enrichment program for students who identify as musically high-performing. The following is a list of qualities that musically exceptional children often display. The term ‘musically high-performing’ generally refers to those children whose abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment are so outstanding that they require special provisions to meet their educational needs. This club provides instruction for students identified as high-performing in music, keeping with the German Ministry of Education’s “Promotional Strategy for High-Performing Students” in § III.2.

Musically exceptional students usually share one or more of these traits:

  • High quality of work and task commitment to music
  • Music involvement and interest either in class or on their own
  • Willingness to explore musical problems
  • Flexible thinking; uses many approaches to solving a problem
  • Creative potential
  • Goes beyond the obvious, sees unusual relationships
  • Thinks of doing musical projects in their spare time
  • Examines and observes things very thoroughly
  • Likes to elaborate on an idea and add details
  • Takes work seriously and completes it
  • High energy level
  • Self-direction

Intended for advanced young music-learners, children in this rigorous program will explore the joy of music-making through highly interactive music activities that engage the mind, body, and heart. Ultimately, this club will strengthen children’s confidence, coordination, concentration, and overall musicality. The club will be led by David Seay, the elementary school music teacher at the FIS. Mr. Seay has a Master of Music from the Nürnberg Musikhochschule, and has also studied music teaching methodology at the Kodály Institute of Hungary and the Dalcroze School of the Rockies.

Parents can register their child for the Music Visions club through the parent portal and are encouraged to provide background information (for example if their child takes private music lessons…) to . Registered children will participate in music evaluations during school. Parents will be contacted privately following the evaluations. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Students not selected at the beginning of the school year are encouraged to reapply next year. If parents agree for their child to participate in Music Visions, attendance must be taken seriously, as enrollment is limited.
