Chess for the 21st Century

Chess for the 21st Century will be an ASA for all levels of chess players; experienced and inexperienced players are very, very welcome. We will continue to build on the skills learned in the primary chess ASA and develop our Chess games focusing on three criteria: The Rules; Tactics; and Strategy.

More specifically, we will use the book, Teaching Chess in the 21st Century: Strategies and Connections to a Standards-Based World by Todd Bardwick (National Chess Master) and explore Chess Basics, Openings, Scorekeeping – Algebraic Notation, Basic Checkmates, Basic Tactics, Draw, Pawn Structure, Square of the Pawn, and Checkmate Patterns.

Our ASA will involve playing competitive games and include puzzles, strategies, and notation to help create well-rounded players prepared to play competitively.

As we play and learn, we will also connect our progress with the Approaches to Learning: Social Skills; Research Skills; Thinking Skills; Communication Skills; and Self-Management Skills.
