Middle School
Middle School - Grades 5 to 8
The FIS Middle School strives to create an environment in which the unique needs of middle grades students are central, allowing them to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. While the Middle School links the Elementary and High School programs, its main purpose is to foster growth in an appropriate setting, optimizing the development of the whole child and cultivating the skills necessary for transitioning into independent learners. To that end, the curriculum is challenging and relevant to young adolescents, while using a variety of learning strategies and teaching approaches that strengthen the diverse skills and abilities of this age group. The growth that occurs during these years shapes the future of the students, and we value and encourage a shared responsibility with parents to ensure the smoothest and most enjoyable learning experiences.
As we prepare our students to become citizens of the world, we strive to nurture a global identity, helping them to have a broader perspective. As stated in the FIS Philosophy and Objectives, we foster "open-mindedness, respect and sensitivity toward the feelings of others, and the development of a sense of fairness and integrity."
Small class size encourages individual growth and personalized attention, marked by strong relationships among students and teachers. Core courses in the FIS Middle School include English, Math, Science, Social Studies, German, Spanish (from Grade 6), Physical Education, Ethics, Art, Music, IT and Library. In addition, the curriculum is enriched through field trips emphasizing experiential learning and community building, and co-curricular activities, such as Student Council and sports, which support the development of leadership as well as physical skills. After-school activities, lead by classroom teachers and designed to allow for the exploration of a wide variety of subjects, are also offered each semester.
A normal Middle School day runs from 8.35 to 15.40 Mondays to Fridays and 8.45 to 14.05 on Fridays.
