Music and Drama
Drama is a practical and interactive subject which allows students to explore human experiences and to express ideas and feelings. It offers sensory, emotional, intellectual and creative enrichment and contributes to the student's holistic development. By expanding capacity for creative thought and expression, intellectual development takes place.
Drama promotes personal and interpersonal skills, supports individual growth, self confidence and trust resulting in valuable life and professional skills. Students increase their knowledge of and appreciation for the dramatic arts, and all the fine arts as performers and informed audience members. Students make choices, take responsibility for their actions and develop skills for present and future challenges. They behave in a positive and supportive manner, and develop human understanding, an ability to compromise and to respect the opinions of others. Self-esteem is enhanced, spontaneity and risk-taking are supported, and differences and individuality are encouraged. Drama promotes problem-solving, imagination and sensitivity and fun and enjoyment are gained in the process. A variety of performance opportunities are available throughout the school-year in classroom and extra-curricular contexts.
FIS students have the opportunity for an enjoyable, positive, fun and rewarding musical experience. They gain performance skills in singing, playing, movement and folk dance. Musical concepts are explored in a practical way together with the development of music reading, writing and listening. An understanding and appreciation for music of different periods, styles, genres and cultures is developed. Repertoire is drawn from a range of sources. Creative expression is experienced through improvisation and composition as well as performance. Students are encouraged to respond critically to music and aesthetic understanding is fostered. The cultural, historical and social context of music is examined.
Each year there are a range of performance opportunities for students in concerts, recitals, productions and assemblies. As part of its After School Activity program, the FIS offers a range of musical ensembles. As well, private instrumental lessons may be undertaken on a number of instruments.
