FIS Community Days May 2022: Looking for Parent Volunteers!

In-House

We’d like to try out an idea this spring, pandemic-permitting: the plan is to have all students off timetable for three days, from May 23-25. The idea is that, instead of having regular classes, students would have various options to choose from during these days, including all sorts of activities, workshops, and projects; both on and off campus. The intention is to open up a space for community connections across the school, with activities designed and facilitated by staff, students, parents, and other community members.

So far, several staff members and Grade 9-11 students have presented some fantastic ideas for activities and events that they would like to facilitate. Now we’re looking to you, parents!

Might you have an idea for an activity that you would like to lead on?

Here are some ideas for starters — all ideas are very welcome!

  • Gardening / woodcraft /arts / crafts
  • Simulation games / escape rooms
  • Teach others how to do something you love to do — for example, play chess, play ukulele, make guacamole, draw anime…
  • Home culture storytelling / dance / language
  • Coding event or hands-on science project

Activities can be planned to take 2 or 4 hours, or a whole school day.

Parameters for Activities

The parameters are very loose in order to encourage all creative ideas to flow freely!

  • CONNECTIONS: Your activity connects in one way or another to any of the following themes:
    • community or global identity and interconnection
    • building belongingness
    • sharing values and responsibilities
    • acting responsibly at community, local, and global levels
  • WHO: Offers are cross-grade-level or cross-section
  • ACTIVITY TIMEFRAMES: Your choice! Either: 2 hours, 4 hours, full day, three full days
  • STRUCTURE: As you like! Some ideas: Activity, group project, TedTalk, seminar, roundtable discussion…

Aims

  • Open a space for community connections across the school
  • Integrate service learning as a personal endeavor for students
  • Empower student and community voices
  • Showcase learning outside the classroom

How to Indicate Your Interest in Participating?

Please record your interest via this Google form by Friday, February 11, 2022. We look forward to opening up this space for community connections!
